Abstract
Despite UNESCO’s calls for mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) approaches in Southeast Asia, regional policymakers have yet to pay much attention to the learning of mother tongues and local languages among children, resulting in the dominance of the national language and English in the curriculum. Grounded in the MTB-MLE, a ‘Na/ver/in’ model, aimed at the combined use of the (na)tional language, (ver)nacular language(s)/regional lingua franca and (in)ternational language is proposed for Southeast Asian primary education.
