Design-Based Research in (Early) Language Learning and Teaching

This presentation outlines the approach of design-based research (DBR) – a very practice-oriented approach to researching issues related to learning and teaching, which bears great potential for the field of (early) foreign language learning and teaching. Based on a more general introduction to DBR, the speakers will share three different DBR-projects conducted at the University of Münster, Germany and conclude with the benefits of DBR for the field.

Jens Folkerts is a researcher and lecturer in English as a foreign language at the University of Münster, Germany. His current PhD research project focuses on developing a design-based teaching unit and principles for teaching foreign language listening. He is also a qualified secondary school teacher.

Rebecca Schlieckmann is a senior lecturer in teaching English as a foreign language at the University of Münster, Germany. She is a qualified secondary school teacher with international teaching experience. Her main research focus is the transition from primary to secondary school and teacher cooperation.

Julia Reckermann is a junior professor in teaching English as a foreign language at the University of Münster, Germany. Her research currently focuses on young language learners, Global Englishes Languages Teaching, CLIL, and teaching English in heterogeneous classrooms. She is also a qualified primary school teacher.

Philipp Siepmann is a senior lecturer in teaching English as a foreign language at the University of Münster, Germany. He is also currently deputy professor of English language education at the University of Erfurt, Germany. His research interests include oracy and oral assessment, design research, CLIL and cultural learning.
