Learning to write in English as a foreign language: Insights from the WiPS study

Date: 5 May 2026

Time: 1 p.m. CET

Speaker: Stefanie Frisch, University Professor, Goethe University Frankfurt

Abstract

Teaching writing has gained importance in primary English language teaching in Germany, yet little is known about the length and complexity of pupils’ texts. This webinar presents the WIPS study (Writing in Primary School), in which teaching units for developing basic writing skills were designed and evaluated in collaboration with teachers. The presentation reports the results of analyses of 189 learner texts and examines factors that influence their quality. On this basis, implications for future research and teaching practice will be discussed.
